2013 Snipes Mountain

One barrel.  100% Grenache.  Upland Vineyard. 

Our first single AVA bottling, this is a single barrel of Upland Vineyard Grenache.  When tasting through the barrels to come up with our 2013 bottlings, this barrel stood out for having the characteristics we identify with Upland Vineyard, red fruit driven, with an elegance and purity more often found in Pinot Noir.

Tasting Notes:  Elegant swirls of strawberry, sweet tobacco, Madagascar vanilla and cardamom mingle with violets and lavender, enticing you to sip.  This wine tap dances across your tongue with an impressive array of flavors all at once:  plum, grape confections, licorice, blackberry, roasted poblano peppers, and hints of leather.  With time in the glass, taught tannins have time to soften and integrate into a lucrative and intense wine that is impossible not to return to again and again.

Light in color, perfumed aromas of potpourri, orange peel and red fruit give way to light, delicate fruit and savory flavors. It provides as lot of intrigue.

This is the third Grenache to score 19.5 points in this publication (the other two cost $65 each). Sourced from the Upland Vineyard, it displays a brick red color and seductive aromas of strawberry, cranberry, pomegranate and cassis, with scents of red roses, sweet tobacco, dried orange peel, lavender, violets, white pepper and sultry oriental incense. On the palate, the medium bodied flavors are alluring as well, endowed with notes of red licorice, cocoa powder, Arabica roast and Snipes Mountain gravelly earth. On the back, the wine turns velvety textured with sensations of gently pressed fruits, pomegranate seeds, recurring orange peel, crème de cassis and finely ground charcoal. At 13.9% alcohol and with fine fruit acids, the wine shows superb balance, all culminating in a lingering, satiny moderate tannin finish.
